sand?
So according to the Colbert interview tonight, we're shipping sand from Kuwait to Iraq? I'd have to wonder why they couldn't just ship sand from Iraq to Iraq. Or just wait for a dust storm.

I just watched the same interview.. and upon searching for it this was the first website I hit that mentioned it... Would'nt everyone love to know more about that interesting concept?
I wish Colbert didn't cut the interview off in mid report. I guess I'll live outraged and curious.
I have no clue why they're doing it, but one of the projects I worked on here in the lab was preparing samples of varying sands from different regions over there. There's quite the variety of sands and not all sands are created equally. The work I did was involved with how the various types eroded various parts of military equipment. I don't know what the story Colbert mentioned was about, but it is odd sounding, isn't it? A bit like Norwegians importing ice from Antarctica.
Or as Colbert put it, importing bullshit to Washington. That may be that the sand is not of sufficient quality; such as if they need beach sand for something. Or Iraqis are somehow building lots of beach volleyball courts (I'm not sure that bikini clad women jumping around in sand goes over as well in Iraq as it does in America). But since they didn't elaborate or follow up on it, it does seem rather silly.
